Fuel Surcharge Recap 2009 and Outlook for 2010

Fuel prices, and subsequently fuel surcharges dropped dramatically in 2009 as compared to 2008. On average, this year’s fuel surcharges applied by carriers were less than half than the rates in 2008.

For FedEx and UPS, the rate increase announced for 2010 will be partially offset by adjusting the fuel price at which the fuel surcharge begins, reducing the fuel surcharge by two percentage points. This means that fuel surcharges applied to air and international services will rise more slowly in 2010 than prior years if applicable fuel prices increase. In addition, if diesel prices fall below $1.75 per gallon, UPS will not apply a fuel surcharge on its ground services. That is a higher threshold than the $1.50 a gallon currently in place.
